The brilliant husband-and-wife-duo of Artemis Shaw and Prashanth Kamalakanthan (of LAFM 2024 selection NEW STRAINS) bring new dimensions to the home-movie with their hilarious sophomore feature, a punch-drunk exploration of the anxieties and rituals of new parenthood. Set in a high-rise apartment, Ph.D student Kallia and fledgling-rapper Ram (Shaw and Kamalakanthan) endure sleepless nights with their newborn baby, while Kallia’s mother (who lives one floor below) looks to end their problems with a Greek rite of passage: to exorcise their family from the evil eye. With a Cassavetes-like inclination to turn the camera on themselves and their loved ones—including their actual baby and parents—Shaw and Kamalakanthan’s fearless, intimate comedy establishes them among the freshest and most inventive young American filmmakers working today.
